Respect autonomy
Listen nonjudgmentally, empathize, and check in. Avoid platitudes, moralizing, trying to correct the person, or turning the conversation into a power struggle.
If the person becomes uncomfortable or changes what they disclose, check in without assuming why. Explain your role transparently.
